The contest is open to students in grades 4-12 and Adult Learners at participating schools. Each student may only submit one piece total. Only individual students may enter - no collaborative work accepted.

Story: fiction which must have a definite beginning, middle and end; character development; a single theme or tone, one central idea.
  • Grades 4-5, 600 words maximum
  • Grades 6-8, 1200 words maximum
  • Grades 9-11, and Grade 12, and Adult Learner, 2000 words maximum
  • Very, Very Brief Story - (Grades 9-12 only): A story under 100 words.

    Essay: clearly shows your feelings and thoughts or research you have done; opinion piece, science report or reflection on a real-life experience or current event, etc.
  • Grades 4-5, 300 words maximum   
  • Grades 6-8, 600 words maximum   
  • Grades 9-11, Grade 12 and Adult Learner, 900 words maximum   
  • Regular Poetry: free verse or rhymed- no maximum word length

    Structured Poetry: traditional poetry forms, such Haiku, Diamond, Acrostic, Sonnet, Limerick [set of 3 related by subject], etc. - no maximum word length
    Book Review a specialized essay in which a book is analyzed based on content, style and merit. The reviewer must state the main points of the reviewed book and his/her reaction to it.
